Sherman Benson Stout, a 39-year-old farmer in the southern region of Doddridge County, West Virginia purchased a leather-bound journal for calendar year 1944. On October 31, 1943, he and his wife had moved into an old farmhouse located on 200 acres one and a half miles from Maxwell Ridge. They were establishing a farm of their own in a community of rural West Virginia farmers. In this sparsely populated section of the state, the couple had to be resourceful as they worked to restore the old farmhouse. He was a full time farmer; she taught in a one room schoolhouse nearby. Beginning on January 1, 1944, Sherman recorded his facts and observations at the end of each day. These included annotations of the weather, what chores he completed, who helped him or those he helped, an accounting of produce sold and items purchased, times of getting up and going to bed, activities at Elizabeth's schoolhouse, comments about letters received or written, as well as mention of family, neighbors, funerals attended, or friends who visited on Sundays. It is a commentary on proud, independent, rural West Virginians during a time of conflict as World War II affected the region's families. The diary is also a testament to industrious and compassionate neighbors through recounting the humble activities of farm life some 73 years ago.
